Dauntless: A fresh, addictive way to play online or solo!

Dauntless was developed by Phoenix Labs but has since merged with Epic Games, known for Fortnite. So how well does Dauntless give Fortnite a run for its money?

Set in a fantasy world where monsters called Behemoths take over the world, your job as the player – or Slayer, is to take them down. Along the way, you collect loot from the Behemoths to craft and upgrade your weapons and armour.

As you evolve and level-up, more challenging Behemoths are available to fight. You can use a range of attacks including the simple heavy/light combination or combo moves.

Naturally, you have to take into consideration your health and stamina which will decrease during the fights.

What’s particularly special is that these Behemoths are anything but easy to take down. Battles tend to vary from 10 minutes to half an hour. The game can be played as a single-player or with up to four people.

Fortnite is still played near enough the same amount as when it became a global phenomenon, but for me, I found it somewhat repetitive after a while. Dauntless, I have found to be a breath for fresh air. I find that it is perhaps more enjoyable when played cooperatively as the fights can seem long when played solo. However, as each Behemoth is unique with different powers, strengths and weaknesses, the game doesn’t feel too repetitive.

The game is still quite new, having been released at the end of May so it isn’t as developed as Fortnite, meaning the game designs aren’t as detailed. At times Dauntless can slightly freeze or lag, but it isn’t enough to interrupt gameplay. These will doubtlessly be patched and updated as time goes on and the game builds momentum.

I find there is enough to explore in Dauntless as you can craft new gear with different strengths and can be given missions and tasks along the way.

In terms of an online game which works for solo gaming too, I think Dauntless is pretty successful and keeps the player interested on both sides. I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes the next big hit.

8/10

Dauntless is available on Xbox One and Playstation 4. It will be released on Nintendo Switch this year.
